any sites near National Space Centre?

Post by dbroada on Sun Jul 31, 2016 9:33 pm

my adult son will be visiting me soon from New Zealand. We are not sure what we are going to be doing but he has expressed an interest in going to the National Space Centre in Leicester. smiley_balloons

Can anybody recommend a campsite near(ish) to there? We would rather a "proper" campsite with showers & toilets rather than use the on board facilities - we haven't seen each other for several years so lets avoid potentially embarrassing situations. blushes

And while on the subject, where would you visit in the Midlands? He wants to see typically "British" things that he can't see in NZ.

I can't help you on the sites but if you want something essentially British how about the National Tramway Museum at Crich.

http://www.tramway.co.uk/

I went there last month. A really good day out. Lots of vintage trams going up and down the Main Street of this reconstructed village. You pay for your ticket in old pennies and can travel up and down the one mile track as much as you like. Lots of reconstructed buildings from around the Victorian era. Don't miss the pub selling steak pie, mash, gravy, and mushy peas. More trams in the tram shed and workshops. Really interesting guided tour. I could go on......
Forgot to mention. Loads of motorhome parking. When I enquired at the ticket desk I was told to park in a coach bay. They are nice enthusiastic people.

How did you know I've always wanted to go there but keep forgetting about it? I'll add it to the "what about this" list.

It should fit nicely in with the hovercraft museum in Gosport.

Dave......you sound like me. I have been wanting to go there for the past 10 years at least, but never had the chance until coming back from a holiday up north this year. Came south via Derbyshire so took the opportunity to visit. You won't regret going. Hovercraft museum? Never heard of it. Will be near Portsmouth in a few weeks......I sense a visit.

The notice on the door says its only open Saturday but the web site adds Wednesday too. Probably worth a phone call if you're not there on a Saturday.

Black Country Museum in Birmingham http://www.bclm.co.uk/   Big car park

Transport Museum    http://www.wythall.org.uk/index.asp.  CC site next to the transport museum. Bus stop into Birmingham next to site

There are many old country houses in the Midlands. Look up English Heritage and the NT.

Ludlow is an old quaint town with black and white houses, a market and a
castle. There is a site quite near    http://www.morris-leisure.co.uk/caravan-parks/ludlow-touring-park.htm

http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/cosford/ at Wolverhampton. Plenty of sites nearby.

Remember it's the school holidays.

No not got that far, what made me particularly interested was the fact they allow dinghys on the site and mention of a lake. We have a sailing dinghy which we like to sail, but find it increasingly hard to find anywhere that allows them on site. Also the places in my youth that had slipways free to use are no longer there as they close them down when Jet Skis start to use them. goneoff

goneoff ? And when has that been a problem with me?

m8form8, I haven't used that site - I'll go and do that now. (Your link won't click for me but I have found it anyway)

daisy mae, yes I do use uk campsites but the few I looked at had mixed reviews. Each appears loved by some and hated by others so I wasn't really sure where to start.

Thanks for the other things to do suggestions. With them the site search can broaden. I don't yet know how much time we will have to get away in with other commitments but I know we will get some time away.
