Pointing Empty Pointing

Why do politicians (especially Americans) point at people in the audience when they walk onto or off the stage?

Because pointing into a crowd is an inclusive gesture, it makes the people in the general direction of the point feel included, no matter how lowly or unwashed you may be, it shows they care about you, in much the same way as being positively stroked by a kind comment from management at work.

Politics (especially in the US) isn't about politics but popularity (guess it has been for a long time saying that).

They get training from body language experts and speech writing etc. It's almost irrelevant what they say, but how they say it.

I was reading an article recently which compared Martin Luther Kings famous speech with some of Hitlers speeches.

While the content is obviously vastly different, the structure and key phrases/points are surprisingly similar. Bit of a tangent but I find this sort of thing interesting :)

And both speeches are very stirring.  Without knowing a single word of German you can't help being drawn into Hitler's speeches.
