Hello there,
My name is Dave I live in Cumbria, I am retired (hurray!) married with 2 grown up daughters and have 2 beautiful Grandchildren.
Ever since I retired I have always hankered to own a motor-home and was going to when I retired, but then we bought our present home and the motor-home money went on refurbishing it.
I was out the other day walking with my Grandson and I spied a very unhappy looking girl sitting in a garage car park, a AS Talisman GL with a L plate so 1993. She looks so sorry for herself dirty and not cared for. I got thinking about a winter project to bring her back to life. I shall have to make enquiries with the garage owner.
I thought that it a good idea to join this club so that if I do end up getting her I could share my progress and get help if needed.
Bye for now!

Hi Dave, group_welcome

If you are thinking seriously of buying, then come here first with more details and pictures.
As well as potential pitfalls, we can tell you what to check and what to look out for before parting with cash.

Yes - what Chris said - plus a welcome from me.

Some dozy beggars spend a load of cash on a van, then come onto a forum afterwards and ask if they have done the right thing!!

Is that logical - or even sensible??

Ask, and you will be advised. Up to you then whether you take the advice or do your own thing, but do ask first! allthumbz

Thank you meanchris and Gromit for your welcome, appreciate it. Yes I know what you are saying, it's a minefield checking out an old Motorhome, externally, internally and mechanically. I am a Yorkshire man  at heart having grown up Sheffield way so I won't be parting with my cash easily!! I think that I have a slight advantage as I trained and qualified in the army as a vehicle mechanic, should be a help. If I do need advice I will certainly come here. Thank you.

Thank you for the welcome Boaby it's appreciated. When I was a kiddie my parents regularly took me and my sisters on summer holiday to Thornwick Bay we used to stay in a wooden cabin on top of the cliffs. I always remember these holidays with great affection. A highlight was a trip to Bridlington!

I plan to go and see the garage owner to find out more about this motor, I have no idea who owns it or even if they would part with it, you see the garage owner rents out long term parking on his land.

Thank you for the welcome groundhog. Yes it's a beautiful part of the country we've been there, many moons ago when we used to go camping with our young family. I look forward to a return.

Thank you for the welcome modelman, appreciated. Is yours a 4 berth? The one I'm looking at is and has the over cab bed, that's where I'll be kipping. My wife often wakes and gets up so would sleep below. I have been in touch with the garage owner but he hasn't anything to do with the motor, but gave me a contact number for the person who lets the parking. So that's my next port of call!

Flippin' heck you've penned a lot of posts!

Hiya meanchris
I've been in touch with the owner of this Talisman, had a long chat on the 'phone. Owner has had it since 2003 and done a lot of European travels with no trouble. Owner is the 2nd owner.  Says that a relative is an MOT Inspector and always did regular servicing and testing including timing belt renewal. Mileage is in the top end of the 90K's, (diesel engine) The motorhome has been parked up for a number of years since the owners bad health, occasionally started up but not driven. I shall be looking underneath for rust at wheel arches, front step/cills, brake pipes. Exhaust condition and tyres. Inside I'm not so sure what to be expecting or what to be looking for either really, except for the smell and indication of damp.
Anyway any advice would be very welcome, I'm going to see it tomorrow some time, I'll take some pics then.
I have no idea about the value, which is a worry. I see incredible prices on-line, never less than £5K. and sometimes over 12!!

Hi Dave, if it's a Talbot base, then presumably it should look something like this on:

http://www.meridianmotorhomes.com/motorhomes/autosleeper_talisman_0409/autosleeper_talisman_0409.htm

I wonder whether a cheeky offer of 5-6K might do the trick?

I know nothing about the Talbot base vehicle I'm afraid, but I'd be wanting to take my time and look underneath, check that the gearbox is good, check that everything works - heating - water heater - lighting etc etc - the list is endless, so unless you're prepared to fettle stuff yourself it all needs to be working.

I'm sure that others will comment with suggestions.
It's probably a good thing that it's not on a dealer forecourt, as it means you're not pressurised to snap it up too quickly.

Good luck up!

Hi dave, no, mine is only 2 berth, but it has huge storage in the luton & its associated 4 side cupboards!
We always make ours up as 2 long singles either side, this leaves the central 'isle' for either of us to go walkabouts!!
