Water filler cap

Post by steverussell on Fri Jul 08, 2016 10:25 am

Morning all.
I am the recent and proud owner of a 1986 Bedford CF 2l petrol Auto Sleeper, which with a bit of TLC is now our pride and joy. We are planning a couple of music festivals and to visit friends for long weekends, whether they like it or not! Sadly the water filler cap, accessed from under the bonnet, is missing and none of the new types available will fit. It looks like a motor radiator style fitting. Any ideas where I could source one? I have looked into replacing the whole filling assembly but the hose to the tank is about 3cm and all the new kit appears to be 4cm. Suggestions welcome. Steve and Val.

Hi Steve and Val

It might be worth phoning Mark at A/S Service Centre. It is a long shot, but he's a mine of information and always very helpful.

If no joy there I would consider making a push in stopper from some of that very high density polyurethane foam. It's food safe, very rigid, and would cut quite well at high speed on a lathe, so you should be able to get a good solid fit that would do the job well.

Just a thought.

Sounds like the one which was on my RV50.
Go to any accessory shop and get an 'old type' radiator cap - even Halfords??

If it's the same as mine (1988 Rapport) and I imagine it is, then a standard radiator cap won't fit I think. I asked Autosleepers and their somewhat terse reply was along the lines of "we no longer supply spares for those old things".

If it is like mine then it's the same size as a 2" oil tank cap from a British motorcycle. It's not exactly 2 inches but it's clearly not 2 1/2. The only place old British motorcycles are still made is India, so:

I just bought one of these. It's exactly the right size, although it needed the fitting on the filler neck to be very slightly fettled. It's shiny too!

Could it be the cap as used on the expansion tank of some British Leyland cooling systems.     As you say yourself, it looks like a radiator cap fitting and Frank thinks his was similar.   The expansion tank cap looked just like a standard radiator cap but instead of the coiled spring and rubber seal inside, it was just a flat cap with a rubber washer.       Try searching for Allegro, Maestro and possibly Land Rover.

Good luck   Bob
