AS normally build on Peugeot's but we have come across a few (very few) on Fiat. There is always the possibility that the body has been transplanted on a Fiat cab. Is cab a Fiat or just the engine?. If it's a genuine original AS there will be a build number on a label stuck inside the glovebox. If no label, the be wary that this could be a transplant.

Go and look at it and first look for that build number label. If it's not there, then walk away.

If you call Auto-Sleepers with the build number (if it has one) they may be able to tell you what base vehicle it was originally on, or at least give advice if their records don't go back that far.

There are 8 Talismen/Talismans (?) on Autotrader at present and one of them is on a Fiat base. It's a 1996, up in Cumbria. So they are about. http://motorhomes.autotrader.co.uk/used-motorhomes/auto-sleepers/talisman/1996-auto-sleepers-fiat-ducato-talisman-4-2-berth-petrol-penrith-mfpa-2c929b9c5438f5310154af82e2d30d40/makemodel/make/auto-sleepers

Generally these days the only reason A/S use a Fiat is if the customer wants an automatic gearbox as Peugeot don't offer one. Back in '96 neither made an auto, so I guess the use of Fiat was either down to customer request or a shortage of Peugeot chassis cabs and the need to keep the A/S production line working.

This would make me very, very wary! £8k seems too cheap for a '99 van unless it's done massive mileage, or it's banged about, or it's "not quite right" (e.g. stolen/cloned).

I hadn't taken in the price, that would cause alarm bells for me too. The Talismen on A/T are priced:

1990 63k miles £7,000
1996 68k miles £12,500
1998 67k miles £16,000
2000 48k miles £20,000
2003 29k miles £23,000
2003 40k miles £24,000
2003 50k miles £24,000
2004 77k miles £17,000 Cat. D.

That would put a 1999 Talisman with around 50/60k miles at about £17,000 to £18,000 from a dealer, maybe £1,000 less on a private sale.

So it is well under priced unless it is a Cat. D or has major problems.

Whatever you do, do not part with any money before inspecting the van.

Would it not be worth asking the seller to send you a photo of the label? If the reply is "no" it may save you a wasted journey.

Brian.

Are there any forum members in Kent who could pop over and check out the 'label' for you?

Drove it home and it drove faultlessly the guy even left around £50 worth of fuel!
Lots of service history
I'm well pleased today can't stop looking at it!!!!

That's an amazingly low price for a '99 van. It would probably be wise to ~assume~ that there will be a few things that need fixing - but at that price you should be able to afford to spend a bit on it...

What you need to do is look in the glove box and there will be a sticker with a build number on.  Phone Auto Sleepers give them the build number and they can tell you details of your van. This should give you peace of mind (or otherwise!!)

Hi I have checked can't see one. So my friend has autosleeper to so she looked in her glove box she hasn't one either. So not really sure how reliable the build numbers are, may phone autosleeper tomorrow lol but to be honest I'm pretty sure it's fine literally can't do anymore checks on it...

Hi, there's no sticker in my glovebox either, although there is an outline of where it once was, I think probably owners don't realise that they are quite important and that when the stickers get damaged they just scratch them off not realising.

They don't look important, mine just has a number hand written in biro, which is quite faded.
Stop worrying! get on with enjoying your new van - if it does everything you want it to do then it doesn't matter if its 'genuine' or not.

There was no sticker in my glove box either but I discovered a green card with a handwritten number on it among the documents which turned out to be Betty's build number.  Worth checking through your paperwork just in case  up!

There was no build number in our 2005 Exec, but AS were able to provide it from their records with a phone call.

I've now stuck a label in the glove box.
