Electric step in ford amethyst not working

Post by shirltrot1365 on Tue Jun 28, 2016 8:16 pm

I have a Ford 1975 Amethyst autosleeper and the electric step will not work.  I have checked the fuses on the zig and under the drivers dashboard.  I cannot find any fuses under the driver's seat or for that matter anywhere else in the motorhome.  I am now thinking that the relay may be faulty.  Does anybody have any idea where I may find the relay for the step, or any other ideas would be much appreciated.
Many thanks in anticipation .

What make is the electric step?  It must be a very early example, because electric steps were not normally fitted to 1975 models. It could, of course, be a retro-fit addition,

Get a manual step. I always find the electric step doesn't feel very safe

I doubt it can be a 1975 vehicle, because it would have to be built on a Mk1 Transit if it were that old!

Amethysts are not that common here, so you may find it quickest to phone Autosleeper - giving them the correct info on exactly when it was manufactured - and asking where the fuses and relays are. If I had to guess, I would go for a fault in the switch/wiring on the step itself, due to a coating of road muck - but that is pure guesswork.

I am so sorry, I mistakenly put the incorrect year of our motorhome, it is, in fact, 1995, not 75.   Sorry for this.  Reply to Cymro is that the step is made by Omnistor.  I hope you can help further, after me admitting my mistake.   In reply to Mojo's useful reply, I have e mailed Autosleeper, but they have so far not responded, I will telephone them in the morning and hopefully they will be able to help.  Thank you all.

I am still trying to sort out my step problem.  Please can anyone give me any ideas where I can find the relay for the electric step, or any other useful suggestions.   Many thanks.

I would have guessed under your seat but you say you have checked there. Where is your leisure battery, the relay is usually close by.

If it's a retro-fit it may be supplied directly from the habitation battery. Possibly no relay ( I can't see that one is a necessarily a requirement ) but with a fuse, maybe an inline fuse close to the battery.

If the step was fitted by Autosleeper there will be an inline fuse somewhere near the buzzer which could be under the drivers seat or in the dash. The relay will be behind fridge or cooker or in cupboard near the habitation door, follow the wires back from the step. There is a switch under a cover on the side of the step that can stick.

I had an Amethyst of same age, from memory the step was an Autosleeper fitted unit from new, there was no buzzer on mine but it only worked if engine was switched off not when it was running. Under the panel above the door there are some fuses on the control panel there, id immagine one is the step. They are very fiddly to pull out and push back in as behind a narrow plastic sliding panel. If there is a relay Id immagine it is either there or under the fridge where another section of the sargent charging system is to be found. The only relays I saw on mine are under the dashboard on the drivers side in the main fuse board. As the habitation battery is under the bonnet it could be one of those too. Id start with checking the fuses above the back door, then check the ones at the front. The orminster step seemed fairly robust so unless the contacts are dirty or the motor gone it should be ok. Hope that helps its all from memory though.. good luck. up!

Amethyst Step Not Working

Post by immobilejim on Tue Jul 26, 2016 5:34 pm

I have a Year 2000 Amethyst fitted with an Omnistep.
I seem to remember that there is fusebox under the bonnet and one of the fuses is marked retractable step. It is near the main battery on the offside of the vehicle.
I know because I have to remove the fusebox to get the battery out - frequently (another story)
Unfortunately my van is in a storage compound a few miles from here or I could check, but may give you a clue.
Jim.

Amethyst Step Not Working

The other fuse is for the fridge - located next to the retractable step ! Is this a retro-fit ?

Probably not, in that era (and maybe now) Ford installed the leisure battery and split charge relay so AS had to install a lot less on conversion.

I had a similar problem and ended up tracing the wiring. There was a loose connection in the wiring near the door. Can't remember exactly where, it was a while ago, but I am fairly sure it was behind the up/down switch.
Disconnected both batteries and eased it out. Easy fix once found.
