wood batten

Hi. I have just come back from a 7 week trip to Europe in my Nuevo.  Van made it this time! My only problem was when putting up the step a piece of wood fell down from behind it.The wood was completely rotten! On getting under the van I found some other battens with the same problem .The wood battens are on the edges of the wooden floor and seem to be glued on?  
Can anyone tell me if they have wooden battens (6cm.wide x 3cm deep of various lengths) around the edges of their floor?

What purpose do they serve as they do not seems to be supportive and just cover the space between floor and edge of van?

How do I replace them and should they be replaced with something other than wood?

Anyone else's experiences would be much appreciated
