Vented Petrol Cap? Empty Vented Petrol Cap?

Post by ChrissieNL Mon Jun 20, 2016 7:33 pm

Hello All,

I've just become the owner of a Ford Transit Auto Sleeper ' Flair ', 1992 2 Litre Petrol...J reg.

I love it, my husband and son do too, looking forward to trips and stays out in it.

I wondered if anyone could help me though, because there is a smell of petrol inside, when the petrol tank is full, there isn't a problem, but when it drops to about the half full level, the petrol smell comes back!

Does anyone know if it should have a vented petrol cap?  At the moment there isn't one, my husband thinks it should have one.

If so, can anyone suggest where to get one from??

Many thanks,

I / we, look forward to discussions on here.

Take care all,

 Best wishess

According to petrolcaps.com a Transit from 01/92 to 09/94 uses a non-vented cap.

Hi chrissie, we have a 2 litre petrol as well. Ours is a 'g' reg. It does exactly the same as yours. Ours have a smell of petrol as well but my husband says its nothing to worry about as its just vapours coming from the carb and you dont need a vented cap. hope this helps.

Sorry ladies, but if I could smell petrol in my vehicle, I would worry. It would not have been like that when it left the factory, and it shouldn't be like that now.

As for just vapours, you can throw a lighted match into a bucketful of petrol and it will extinguish. If you hold a match over a bucketful of petrol it could possibly be the last thing you did [or very close to it].

Do us all a favour, both of you, and get it fixed - PLEASE!

smile!   Hello Tove and Hello Frank,

I know it shouldn't smell of petrol, my son who has a friend who is a mechanic is going to sort it out for me, apart from the dangers of the vapours, I JUST cannot take the smell, it making my eyes sore and my head ache.

Tove, I hope you and your husband will be OK, and Frank, thanks for your concern, I WILL get it sorted out though, it's in the process of being done now...

Thank you both very much for your replies....

I'm loving this forum already  hugegrins

I'm not sure if Tove will receive this as well as you Frank?  I couldn't see a 'reply' thingy anywhere, only on yours... confused3

Anyway, thanks again...and I'm sure I'll soon be 'petrol fumeless ' soon..

Best wishes to you both.

Vented Petrol Cap? Empty Re: Vented Petrol Cap?

Hi Chissie, your initial intro and concern re smell of petrol is probably the best decision you've made to date together with taking Frank's urgent advice to have it investigated without delay. Generally, the smell of petrol provides adequate warning of hazardous concentrations. The vapour may travel to a source of ignition and flashback. The hydrocarbons in the air are readily absorbed in the lungs and your symptoms of headache and sore eyes clearly indicate a level of intoxication that is unsafe. Regards.

Hello Paramedic  smile!

I tried to send a reply, don't think I did it right??

I'll try again, sorry if you get two!!

I wanted to thank you firstly for your kind words to me, and secondly for adding your concern, yes, it isn't right that the Auto Sleeper has petrol fumes inside, it should all be sorted out before I go away in it on Friday, 8th. July.

I am grateful to you for your words, I hope Tove reads this and has hers looked into too.

I would hate for anyone to suffer because of this kind of problem, sore eyes, headaches, or WORSE!!

Take care Paramedic...let's hope I don't need you because of petrol fumes!!  biggrin

 Best wishes,
