A Russek Manual is a good idea if you want to do anything mechanical. They're not expensive and are very useful.

Replacing a thermostat is usually very simple. My Fiat appears to share the same Manual and it just says "To remove the thermostat, drain the cooling system* and disconnect the hose from the water outlet. Unscrew the thermostat cover and lift out the thermostat. ... The installation is a reversal of the removal procedure."

It's always a good idea to check the condition of the hoses while you;re doing this job.

There is no need to bleed anything. Just re-fill the coolant and after a few miles, check the level and top up if necessary (let it cool right down first!).

It's many a long year since I bought a thermostat but they always used to be supplied with a gasket.

* You don't need to drain completely - only to a level below the thermostat.

If you buy the DVD from JK Towers:

http://www.jktowers.co.uk/product/te_manuals_cd_dvd

You'll find the Russek manual on there and a host of other things.
Get the DVD version, its only 50p more

BE VERY CAREFUL!!!
the stat goes into the water pump body which is alloy, the steel bolts fuse to the alloy & will probably snap. The water pump is available but its not an easy job!
Luckily I have a solution that'll only cost you a fiver!
Look on eBay for Renault 4 thermostats, they fit inside your top hose , just remove the hose (2 jubliee clips) warm the hose in hot water, get some soap to use a lube & pop it in!
I've had one in mine for 18 months & it runs perfectly, never overheated once.!
