Gearbox problem.

Post by pheobe2001 on Wed Apr 27, 2016 11:48 am

Our 2002 Peugeot Boxer Talisman has lost synchromesh on 2nd. gear.  Broadway can not help.  Three out of six garages we have contacted say spare parts are not available, others say the problem is "bad news".   Will welcome comments from any one who has experience in having the repair or replacement of a gearbox successfully sorted. We are in Somerset so can travel in the South West from Bristol onwards.

I  asked my husband, about this,  and he said no main dealers, they are not mechanics nowadays, just fitters, an old fashion auto mechanic, luckily I have one of those that looks after my VW, hubby says there must be plenty of boxers in scrap yards etc where you may be lucky. as firms trade up after a few years perhaps worth some research.

There are also gearbox specialists who will make new parts, for a price of course.

Hi,
Keep away from dealers and agents, they only know about very recent vehicles, also don't bother with peugeot. You could possibly get one from a scrapyard but it might have done more miles than the starship enterprise. I know that one of the gearbox repair specialists in birmingham is able to source parts from Poland and has a Polish employee to do this, I don't know what the company is called but you could do worse than spend an hour on the phone, best of luck,

The Birmingham firm is mentioned in the thread linked by Ploughlin

Not perhaps the answer you are looking for but if it's just a loss of synchromesh you could save yourself the money of a repair and learn to double de-clutch when changing gear.  I appreciate that for many this is something they would prefer not to have to do, just a thought.  In my early days I drove BMC cars and very few had any syncro left on second gear and it was never fitted to first anyway.
