Propex heater in 1993 Harmony

Post by shawgough on Sun Mar 06, 2016 7:27 pm

Hi there

I've just recently bought the above van and the air blown heater didn't seem to be working.

No lights come on when I move the rocker switch, and no sound comes from the heater box, suggesting that the van isn't coming on.

It seems like a power supply issue.

Anyone got any ideas?

I think you're right about it being a power issue.
Have you checked the fuses?

BTW is it on a Talbot Express?

Yes, it's a Talbot express.

I've looked at the fuses and the middle one in the right hand column of 3 has gone. I'm hoping that's it.

Do you know which appliance that relates to?

Thanks for your reply.

Its fuse No 6 [10 amp] on my van but that is probably not much help, being a different model, year and base vehicle.
Its got to be worth a try replacing the blown fuse. If it blows again when you switch the heater on you'll know that a) its the right fuse b) you have a short somewhere in the wiring or the heater.

I can recommend you investing £4 on this DVD http://www.jktowers.co.uk/product/te_manuals_cd_dvd  [I bought it just for curiosity]
Although not specific to the Harmony, there is a lot of stuff on it relating to the Express

If it's the same as mine then it's a compact 1600 I think. Here's a link to the instructions:

The thermostat in these instructions is a later model than mine, but the principle is the same.

...I had an issue with Propex a few 'vans ago, turned out to be the leisure battery not charged enough to start the unit, takes a lot of power to get it going. apparently.

Ah, okay. So maybe hand the engine running when trying to activate it?

If the battery is low, the fan will start but then cut out. You say that you are not getting any sound from your heater which indicates that there is no power getting to the fan for one reason or another.

They're quite noisy, you'll be able to hear it...

If it's not the fuse there are a couple of other things to check before you condemn any bits. Obviously you need to see if there's 12 Volts at the thermostat - even if the heater itself isn't connected the lights will still come on. Failing that:

1) It's worth remaking the connections at the thermostat. There's quite a high current during the ignition phase.

2) The switch is just soldered to the board. On mine it had cracked all the solder joints and didn't work at all. I soldered it back in (with a bit of PCB fixing) and all's fine now.

To take the cover off the thermostat, pull the knob off and there's a little screw underneath.

Hope this helps,
Richard.

Great advice. Thank you. I tried a new fuse - 8amp rather than 10amp, as I didn't have the correct one. It attempted to start and then popped again immediately.

is your heater accessible? I don't know where it is located on your van. The wiring to mine is via a chocolate block connector. If you disconnect the heater and it still pops a fuse then you know the fault is between the fusebox and the heater, maybe the wiring or thermostat. If it doesn't pop then the fault is going to be in the fan motor or the gas valve/igniter, or the wiring to them.
Have you got a multimeter?

All fixed. The motor had got gummed up and wasn't turning freely, hence blowing the fuse.

Have now noticed that the fridge is missing the ice box door. Fixing that may be trickier...

If you know the model of fridge, you might get one here:
