Boxer 2.5 engine misfire

Post by judy t on Sun Feb 21, 2016 3:55 pm

Hi again We have a 1998 talisman ,boxer with a 2.5 litre engine. The van runs well and has done 98,000 miles. We have just had a week in scotland, only problem on long hills it will not hold in 5th gear. Drop down to 4th but above about 46/48 miles an hour starts to miss fire. Same in third at about 32/34 miles per hour. It feels like a fuel starvation, or as though the engine is restricted to a set revs level. Any ideas please. We have had the van from 90,000 miles so not all history is known. Thanks in advance, Lew.

A friend had similar on a 2002 Talisman - it was the connection between the air filter and the inlet manifold that had come slightly adrift.

Hi , If you don`t know when the  Diesel Fuel Filter was last  changed it would be advantages to have a new filter fitted as well.

thanks for that, it does seem like a fuel starvation issue.

Hi we have the very same engine in our Talisman 1996. Try the basic stuff first Filters etc etc, then turn to the injectors, they are common rail and will cost around £50 each to overhaul at a diesel specialist, after that it's the fuel pump to ovehaul at a cost of £300-£400 inc removal do you get a smell of unburnt fuel in the cab if you put the heating on to screen ? any smoke when this happens ?

Hi jap1122334
I haven't done much to it brought as a project. The fuel filter and had some injector cleaner added to the fuel. It does clear after a few mins. The engine is lumpy on tick over also smell of fuel in cab when not moving
