Cardiff

Post by Achilles heel on Sat Feb 20, 2016 10:25 am

We are visiting the theatre in Cardiff in April, and are looking at sites for one night.

Looking at the Cardiff Caravan & Camping site which is in the middle of Cardiff, walking distance to town centre, no need to drive the van in and find somewhere to park it, etc. Some reviews seem favourable, but some suggest gangs of drunks using the site as a short cut on the way home at 4am, mud, grubby shower block, hooded youths hanging about, etc.

Has anybody here used this site?

Any other recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

The site is wonderfully located; small in capacity; and there is no alternative within a radius of 10 miles. Yes, during rugby or (more likely) cricket seasons, you might not appreciate late night male voice singing (the riverside Taff path is almost adjacent). I don't know the quality of the sanitary arrangements - it's a municipally-owned site.

My advice is to book soon.

Which theatre are you visiting? If the New Theatre or Chapter, or St David's Hall it's a 15 minute walk; the Sherman theatre is 5 minutes extra.  But if it's the Millennium, that's in Cardiff Bay and is either a water-taxi ride, or a bus ride. Allow 25 minutes or so.  Main shopping Arcades are near the St David's Hall.

Happy to answer any questions.

Hi, Thanks for quick response. Site booked; they sound very friendly

We're going to the New Theatre, to see An Inspector Calls (again...)

Suggest you walk to town. To eat you might try Mme Fromage in Castle Arcade. Then along Queen St (pedestrianised) and left at Parc Thistle hotel to the New Theatre. Personally I'd take a cab back in April.

AS Cymro states, it's probably one of the best-located sites within a city anywhere. It's just a shame that the council won't spend a bit more tarting the place up. One of the shower blocks could do with a bit of an upgrade as can the pitches themselves; most of the grass-crete blocks have disappeared under the mud.
I think the main stumbling block is that the driveway through the site is actually a public right of way. It's well used by commuters going in and out of town and less so during the evenings.
Security has been an issue with several bikes stolen off the back of 'vans. They now offer to lock them up for you within one of their buildings. Perhaps a few inspectors calling might help!
However, I'll say again that it is in a fantastic spot. Walking into the city for the free museums, shops, parks and gardens, access to the cycle routes, all counteract the slight shabbiness of the place.
It's certainly worth staying more than the one night and I hope you have a great time. And if you do happen to stay longer, then I can recommend the Mochyn Ddu pub (Good pig?) which is just a stroll away and serves great food and beer.
