Gear lever extension

Post by George.. on Fri Jan 29, 2016 5:37 pm

Hi all, we have a 2000 Gatcome on a T4 and find the floor gear lever a bit of a reach. Anyone use an extension and is an angled one better than a straight one.

I have a T4 (Trident). Fitted a  straight gear lever extension. Best mod made to the cab. Did try an angled first one but found it not as good.  Really improves gear changing on the T4

Doesn`t the extension make it more difficult to get through to the back,? I haven`t one for this reason, I am 5` 2" with short arms hugegrins but I manage ok as it is. Would like others views on this who do have the extender.

I have an angled gear lever extention and it really works for me,the lever comes to hand nicely,  best £5 i've ever spent.

I dont find it makes getting into the rear any more difficult.

Seen lots of fairly expensive ones, got mine off ebay and deliberately went for a cheap one to see if it worked first. As it happens it cost less than a fiver, seems well made and looks good in polished alloy. screws onto the gear lever and secures with a grub screw so no slippage and the original gear knob lines up just right.

Whoops !!!! I really must pay more attention, just reread post and it is the gear lever that it refers to, I am fine with that ,it is  the hand brake I could do with being a bit higher though.  err sorry guys wrong again, think I am tired , late night last night or rather this morning.

I tried 100mm cranked extender first, then settled for a 150mm cranked one. We are all shorties so it really helps.
One thing to consider though:
By extending the gearstick you lengthen the throw or movement.
One of the best modifications you can do on a T4 is the short shift mod.
Only involves re drilling a hole to re locate a selector rod.
It shortens the travel of the gear leaver by a good couple of inches.
This way you can have ur cake & eat it.
I'm really happy with the transformation from what was previously a difficult gear change that hag me leaning out of the seat to reach 1st.
Now the stick is where it should be on a modern vehicle & the gear change is a pleasure.
Can't recommend this mod enough.
There is a good step by step "how to" thread on the T4forum with loads of pics.
Took about half an hour.

I went for the cranked extension as it meant I could position it to suit, whereas the straight one just extends it straight upright. It gives a very comfortable gear change. As said previously get one with the locking grub screw to hold it in position.

I used PTFE tape & Threadlock. Seems to work well on the threaded types.

Short shift Mod and extension makes a huge difference. good idea to replace all the bushings at the same time. Tightens everything up.
