I don't think it is a medical as such, just your doctor filing in some boxes and signing (for a fee), provided you have seen him recently. Same with the optician bit.

This is very confusing subject but looking at Gov trailer guide again and other Gov sites I see there are two issues, your age and when you passed your test.

If you have C1,  (over 3500) or D1,  (minibuses),  on your licence then to continue to drive these after the age of 70 you need a medical.

If you passed your test before 19th June 2003 you should have BE category which is a car plus a trailer over 750kg, limited by what weight your car (or motorhome up 3500kg) can tow. This definition remains while you hold your licence.

If you passed your test after 19th June 2003 the definition of BE changed to a trailer with a max MAM of 3500kg, still limited by the towing capacity of your vehicle.

Category BE like B do not require a medical certificate after the age of 70.

I think I need to lie down after that! Please correct me if you think I'm wrong.

Most people worried about turning 70 probably passed a test before Jan 1997. It is then a different set of rules.

All seems over complicated to me, I also question most Doctors ability to actually know what their patients ability is like behind the wheel. I have to say I think all drivers ought to have to go on a simulator that measures driving reactions from age 70 on-wards to keep a licence to drive. i seems irrelevant to me how large the thing they drive is if competent to drive.  scratch head scratch head scratch head What matters to me is are they able to react to things. No one wants to give up driving as they get older, rather than depend on GPs it ought to be a fair measured test of ability.

Hi
It is so complicated, the way I read it is over 70years limited to Motorhome up to 3500kg unless you take a medical as far as a trailer goes you can tow up to it's limit.

Totally agree and I have always advocated a simple driving assessment via an approved driving instructor just to check ability et al.
As do private pilots, they have a check flight, license stamped and age is irrelevant allthumbz

Isn't there an age related expiry time on their obligatory medical certificate? If you think DVLA renewal is complicated read the CAA site.

Not sure, I know pilots in their 80's.
It just seems to make sense for a 15 min driving assessment with an online tick on your licence records every few years to keep driving licence current for All vehicles not just post 3.5 tonnes. Not reliant on age but ability. Would take away those that are obviously unfit to drive (i.e the crash on the motorway last week) and allow those that are able to drive to keep going safely.
Would generate a nice industry of 'assessors' and remove all the pathetically slow inefficient admin we now have to put up with via DVLA.

Reading Form D4, with the exception of a blood pressure reading taken on the day of the examination (form filling) all other information is historic based on your notes, covers psychiatric, cardiac, lung cancer affecting the brain, liver or renal failure, profound deafness and sleep apnoea syndrome.
