Thats probably about right for an Excelsior AUTOMATIC, I guess a manual box version would average somewhere about the 27mpg mark, remember its quite a big body

It depends on what engine you have and what type of driving you do. If you have the 2.5l Tdi and you do mainly fast road/motorway driving and you keep the speed moderate (i.e. 60MPH or under) then that is significantly lower than I would expect. If you push it up to 70 the MPG will drop in quite a major way, as it will if you do a significant proportion of your driving around town, or if many of your journeys are short and the engine is not fully warmed up.

The auto box makes a big difference to fuel consumption around town, but very little on the motorway (because it has lockup in, IIRC, the top 2 gears).

Well our older 1995 automatic 2.5 non turbo transit amethyst regularly averages 29 mpg. On occasions we've even managed over 30mpg driving constantly at 50-60.  scratch head
