Finding a 1 night stop over.

Post by micknhilary on Mon Aug 31, 2015 8:05 am

Good Morning All.

We are shortly to be making our regular trip from Weymouth to Ullapool. Normally this is a laid back affair which we take anything up to a week to do. However, this time circumstances dictate that ideally I do it with just two intermediate stops. Based purely on the road map my first stop would be close to the M6 about as far north as Stoke on Trent.  The second stop would be close to the M74 in the area of Glasgow.
I have never stopped in either of these areas before thus they are a complete mystery to me. Can anyone suggest suitable places to spend just one night. We are not looking for anything  in the way of   facilities.

Many Thanks,         Mick.   wave

Hi Mick
C&C have a site near the Strathclyde park, its a fairly new site so plenty of room on the pitches and eateries within walking distant.

Thanks Boaby,
If I am right the site in Strathclyde Park is a Caravan Club Site. Within the last 6 months, after 30 odd years of belonging to both Clubs I gave up the Caravan Club because I used the Camping Club so much more. Sods Law strikes again.

The Caravan Club publish a .pdf file of Night Halts on Motorway Service areas, downloadable via:

Don't know if that would help ?

Mick,
Since you're not looking for facilities, can I suggest that for the Northern stop you carry on through Glasgow to Loch Lomond. Lots of 'deep' laybys here if you don't want to stray off the A82.

Hi Mick
Sorry about that. scratch head Could be some CI sites abit further south on the 74, there's a couple of camping club sites on the north side of Glasgow one near Luss and the other near Drymen.
Hope you have a great time and the weather improves.

Have a look at Britstops (£25 ish to buy their book) as they have loads of good free stop overs and we use them quite a lot.

I regularly go to Ullapool. I would never use the west route around Loch Lomond. Very pretty but road not good .. I go east and use the A9 ..fast safe good road

Hello Mick, CCC have a site at Moffat which is just off J15 M74 there is also a site at Luss about 1 hour north of Glasgow.

Enjoy your trip to Ullapool, lovely part of the west coast.

Yes an ideal site for an overnight stop ....BUT the C&CC won't let you book just one night and on a trip like this I would not want to risk just turning up.
