What do you use to get up into van.

Post by logburner on Thu Aug 06, 2015 11:18 am

What sort of steps do you all use, to scale the heights up into the back door to the van ?
My wife is disabled, and is going to have difficulty getting up in the rear door. Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

I use a plastic step, has a wide footprint, it is an old one so forget the make, Milenco do them, can also get plastic wide footprint double step, have one for the caravan, it wouldn`t fit on my motor home , have elderly dog so handy for him,

Check height of your habitation door, as my door was too low ofr the double step

I stayed clear of the metal steps, know a lady who broke her leg using one, they also dig into the ground, my step has wide feet and can also be pegged down, just my view after decades of caravanning and numerous steps that we have tried.
Hope this helps somewhat.
Regards,
Margaret.

Hi there,

One of these ....

https://peak-outdoors.co.uk/peak-outdoors-strong-steel-folding-caravan-motorhome-step.html

.... after breaking two plastic steps!

It's worth buying something strong and stable.

My Aunty May had to quit caravanning when she was only 75 years old because the caravan step gave way and she broke her femur.

My Mum (her sister) blamed the injury for her early death twenty-six years later! Whistle1 Whistle1

Best regards,

Don't forget that stepping down onto a step, from a van for example, is likely to make it more unstable than stepping up onto one to reach something in your kitchen.  Best to go to a good caravan accessory shop where they sell the properly designed article and try them all by stepping down onto them to see if they wobble.

We used to have an excellent aluminium and steel one, bought from Lakeland, that was very squat with widely spread legs and a big flat top. The legs latched to fold under the stool so the whole thing was flat for storage and it was very stable in use.

Unfortunately Lakeland stopped selling them almost as soon as we bought ours and I have not seen one since.

Edit to add: I have seen steps, bought from mobility specialists, that have a removable support on the side so you have something to hold onto as you go up or down the step. Might be worth trying online from specialists- ?

Thanks Dutto for the quick reply, and the link.........looks good.

Thanks also Quilter, hadn't considered to stepping down bit...........better make sure its put on firm ground.

The caravan had a sturdy, pull out and down aluminium fitted step...........can't see where I'd fit one on the clubman..... confused3
Has anyone got one fitted ?.................Ian.

We have a fitted step on the Broadway but I am not 100 % smitten with it. Yes, there is one less thing to carry in the van but the fitted step is quite bouncy as you step onto it, has quite narrow treads and has twice almost succeeded in throwing me out of the van. I treat getting out of the van with great care these days.

There are also those horror stories you read when steps refuse to retract...!

Hi Quilter,
The step I had on the Eriba caravan, was a manual one, it sounds like yours is electric.
"when steps refuse to retract "..........As I remember, the clubman doesn't seem to have much in the way of chassis struts  around exit door area .

Logburner, we use a Fiamma step with a large footprint, you can peg it down so it wont move when she gets out of van.

I wouldn`t recommend the fixed step that some MH have, footprint not big enough and they bounce

as Quilter said, folding steps I also wouldn`t recommend,

I take a disabled friend out in my MH and she gets on great with my step, she is in a wheelchair, can walk a few steps with walking sticks also she is quite a large lady.

Hi Baz,
Yup; !!  Think it will have to one with a large footprint.........shall check out the fiamma one.     up!

Hi Daisy mae,  I thought too of a folding step, mainly for ease of carriage, but on further consideration have decided that it might fold itself at the wrong time....... shrugg
so a solid one, it has to be.         rolleyes       Ian.

Its just as important to have a strong handrail on the outside of the van. One that doubles as a security lock would be ideal.

Yes Peter..........Thanks for that, it was seeing that handle, that prompted me to see if anyone had successfully affix one to the doorframe of the Clubman.
Baz had a thread on this, a couple of years back.........but so far, I haven't found anyone who has had this done.         so_sad       Ian.
