Depends on type age mileage how well its been serviced how good or bad efficiency wise the automatic box is plus how many gears it has.
The list of contributory factors is huge !

In short it could be a good un or a bad un.. Whatever it wont be many.. Guess would be less than 20MPG at best..

Thanks for the reply...........have now dropped the idea, could be a bad move, especially at 20mpg. I've only got time to make one bad mistake.      lol4

Has the potential to convert to LPG as well, if you're planning to do lots of miles... 20 MPG on LPG is roughly equivalent cost-wise to maybe 30 MPG on petrol (if you ignore the £1k+ conversion cost!).

As above, it also depends how old it is. A modern conventional auto should give only slightly worse MPG than a manual, and a DSG ~should~ (in theory) give about the same - but I don't think any Clubman had the latter fitted.

It will also depend a lot on what type of driving you do. Town driving with an older conventional auto will certainly cost in terms of fuel, but if you are mainly on fast roads/motorways it should not be as low as 20 MPG.

Yes, the gas option sounds good, but it still has to be stored somewhere (room for tank underneath ?)
Think I will pass on the idea now.........It was just that there is one for sale, way down south, but decided I would prefer  to pay an increased price for diesel.     Ian.

I think diesel is the way to go- the 5-cyl engines aren't the fastest but the turbo version would be good. And even better, diesel is now 111.9p/L at my local Morrisons

Go for it.

Hi Ian, sorry it's too good to sell. Ours is a manual gearbox but it should be a huge difference. We have had cruise control fitted, makes life comfortable abroad.
Look on our web-blog for pics of van.

Hi George,
That's of interest....anything I get will need cruise control fitted...is it a pukka vw unit ?
Where abouts did you get it fitted (Norfolk's not too far away)  big thumbs up Any indication of cost would be useful, as I would need to factor that into my purchase costs, and are you pleased with it ?     Ian.

FWIW, I get around 28 mpg from my non-turbo 2.4 diesel, the best I've ever had was 36 mpg and I've been unable to repeat that, or even come close. On the other hand, I don't own a motorhome to save money, I want to enjoy it.
I had cruise control fitted by Dave Newell in Telford, Shropshire. Cost was around £400 6years ago, and its worth its weight in gold. It took a couple of hours to fit.

Hi Rich,
Thanks for that info......gives me some indication of what to expect when I get my forever motorhome...... up!  I need it on motorways, and dual carriageways, stopping the old pins getting cramp.   snigger      Ian.
