Engine oil for Transit Amethyst

Post by Eonod on Mon Jul 20, 2015 10:07 pm

Highly delighted with our new van but I am a bit confused regarding what engine oil we should put in our new (to us) Amethyst.
Its a 2002 Transit 2.4 Turbo Diesel.
The manual (that came with it) says to use 5w30 synthetic but a lot of people are saying we should use 5w40 synthetic.
I have checked prices and 5w40 is cheaper than 5w30, which may be the reason its being recommended.
Anyone able to advise?

I would go with the manual, not worth scrimping on engines is my mandate. the oil for my VW is certainly not cheap, as it is only required once every twelve months I go with it.I look after the engine as without it I  will not be going anywhere., hopefully have trouble free motor homing.

Each to their own of course applies.

best regards,
Margaret

WOW!!  allthumbz allthumbz

I agree with Margaret!! scratch head scratch head

Follow the manufacturers recommendations is my advice as well.

Here's a useful link that explains the numbering system on lubricating oils.

Hi. There has been many improvements in oil since 2002. Same with tyres.
If you have an API number for your oil ,make sure what you buy is at least to that spec.
In 2002 it was API/SL now its API/SN. Of course the car manufactures have equivalent code
The important point is that you need a thin oil from start up. Hence manufacturer quote 5W/30.
Many myths about oil.

Micky

I found some information on oils buried in the manual (capacities and specifications section).

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Engine oil change
Ford Motor Company recommends the use of Ford/Motor-craft Formula E SAE 5w30 engine oil.
Alternative engine oils meeting ford specification WSS-M2C913-A may also be used.

Engine oil top-up
If you cannot find an oil that meets the above specifications, you must use an oil of viscosity SAE 5w30, SAE 10w40 or SAE 5w40, according to ambient temperatures, meeting the requirements of either ACEA A1/B1 or ACEA A3/B3 specifications.
Use of these oils may result in longer cranking periods, reduced performance, reduced fuel economy and increased emissions levels.

Seems the viscosity is the most important factor and 5w30 is the preferred choice.
No contest really, I will stick with 5w30, even if it is £10 dearer.
Thanks for the advice smile!

Hi, I always use the Eurocarparts fully synthetic  5w/30 often on offer at under £15. Its ACEA A3/B3/B4 so widely compatible.
