Advice please - New engine 1990 Trident

Post by Rookie33 on Sun Jul 12, 2015 8:13 pm

Hi Folks
I am new to this forum and I am really hoping someone here can help me. I have a 1990 Trident with a T2 aircolled 2 litre engine. My mechanic has told me that the head gasket has gone  and i very corroded and that it will be cheaper to fit a new engine. A reconditioned T2 engine is looking very pricey. Can anyone tell me if that is my only option? I am trying to figure out whether I should fork out for a new engine plus labour , or  cut my losses and sell it as a non- runner. My understanding is that recon engines come with very little warranty too.
Thanks in advance

Your question may be a bit specialist for this forum! Am I right in thinking the engine is a custom installation, not the original? I don't ~think~ any standard 1990 A-S supplied Trident would have had an aircooled engine, would it?

Hello, if that's the same engine I had many years ago they are prone to corrosion and pricey but easy to repair or replace. It does however depend where you get them done and who does them. A specialist retro VW enthusiast will be better than a run of the mill garage. Id take it and get a second opinion from someone into them, most garages are less geared up to dealing with the vw engines. Maybe someone can recommend you to one on here, or try a vw enthusiasts web site..

As said above, go specialist everytime. Join this forum and ask the question. You can possibly find someone local who can help or give an opinion.

I just looked at the Just Camper prices, Not cheap but 24mths warranty.

Why not fit an engine that was meant for the T4 I am sure there are plenty of reconditioned units around.
