Exhaust manifold Renault Trafic 1987

Post by DoraExplora on Sun Jul 05, 2015 10:45 pm

Our 1987 Renault Trafic 1.7 autosleeper conversion makes a right old clanging noise from underneath when slowing down. The people we bought the van from said it was the Exhaust Manifold and that it wasn't anything to worry about but would be worth keeping an eye open for the part and getting it replaced at some stage.

My questions are...
- Does the clanging noise on deceleration tie in with a failing manifold?
- Where might I be able to source a replacement part (new or second hand)

I keep finding places that want to flog me a whole exhaust system!

Thanks everyone

If it sounds like metal on metal I would suggest first looking underneath the vehicle to make sure none of your exhaust rubber hangers have failed, causing the exhaust to touch the bodywork as you decelerate (as the engine moves slightly and subsequently moves the exhaust) I would also check your engine and gearbox mounts as a failure here would give similar results.
Another idea is that the exhaust could be badly fitted and it is sitting too close to the bodywork, not allowing for expansion/movement.
A failing manifold would result in more noise (as exhaust gasses escape before being silenced by the exhaust system).

My possible answers are:

- Not really, more likely the mountings which are feeble but easily available and easy to fit. Particularly the feeble wire springs which clip in to the chassis: http://www.mister-auto.co.uk/en/exhaust-rubber/bosal-251-353_g1059_a041251-353.html They rust and fall to bits. However, the manifolds do crack, and that results in light, rapid backfiring in the exhaust on the overrun, worse if the mixture's out a bit, which might be the sound you're hearing. If it's that then it's not a problem.

- Nowhere. So hopefully you don't really need one. I doubt it anyway.

Richard.

I too would check the exhaust mountings/straps before replacing the manifold.
If you do a search on the forum for the Renault Owners Club website posting would have been done by Frank you could possibly get leads on suppliers of bits off there.

www.rtmr.org. We do have some spares, I don't know what off the top of my head, but only available to members I'm afraid. £12 a year. There's a form on the web site to join.
