As it says blade mechanism has failed
What do I need to repair or replace removable insert?

Frederick,

First thing is to empty it, wash it out, then do it again, then rinse it and then wait for it to dry.

Next is to go to the van's Owners Manual to find the particular model of toilet.

When you know the model go to the Factsheets section where I think there is a web address for all the component parts available and how they are put together.  This will allow you to dismantle the mechanism to find out what it looks like and what is wrong with it.

Next, Google "Thetford (model number) Toilet Blade Mechanism" and it will probably show as one of the sources ....

http://www.bradtech.ltd.uk/index.html

.... and eventually to something like ....

http://www.bradtech.ltd.uk/products/Holding-Tank-Mechanism-for-C250-and-C260-Cassette-Toilets-T50727-06.html#SID=106

.... where a similar spare blade and mechanism is selling for £30.76 + VAT.

After restarting your pacemaker, you may like to take a second look at the blade and mechanism; where you may discover that all you need is the blade then here's a site that may provide the right bit of kit ....

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thetford-SC250-260-400-Blade/dp/B004DPSXY8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1435765489&sr=8-1&keywords=thetford+toilet+cassette+blade

Alternatively, you may find that when everything is dismantled, cleaned and oiled (with olive oil) nothing actually needs replacing and all it needed was some TLC.  (Oh how I hope this happens! up!up!)

Hope this helps. allthumbz

Best regards,

Ian

Thanks Dutto
Have after 'Reviewing the Situation' I have ordered the whole blade assembly insert from Bradtech plus another slide in cover plate that was left at  Knockalla CS Portsalon in the north of Donegal!!
After thinking it over to just change one part of this VIP bit I thought was a false economy, and assuming that when it was apart to change the broken piece nothing else was to be found wanting.
Their ordering process was relatively simple and you can pay by PayPal.

The blade is easy to change. The difficult bit is removing the circular cover  plate on the top of the cassette. It's sealed with a rubber gasket which forms a very tight seal to the cassette body making it extremely difficult  to turn and release. At least it was in my case.

It's advisable to carry a spare blade as they're only a few pounds. If you have one fail on holiday it will put the toilet out of action unless you have a spare.

Hi there,

This site is useful if anything happens when you are overseas ....

http://www.thetford-europe.com/dealers-service-centres/

Out of interest I searched for outlets near Nantes where we stay most often when in France and the site gave us 14 choices. allthumbz

Enjoy. allthumbz

The toilet was not fully out of action!
Night-time use was still feasible and in a real emergency, know what I mean, was available, the mechanism opened out of line of sight and the toilet emptied and refreshed before setting off. A suitable obstruction was located in the orifice before travel and removed prior to use.
Fortunately all this occurred at the end of our break away.

Frederick,

In the Skegness St. Clements Scout Troop we used the "long trench" method with a moveable Latrine Tent. allthumbz

Your Post brought back many memories; but most of them were pretty gruesome.  lol4   lol4

So did yours Ian, of a tale told years ago by a scrofulous mate of mine when we were in college.

He lived near Northampton and there was a "long trench" public toilet in town. It had a sloping channel with a flushing system at the high end, which washed all the contents down a drain at the low end every couple of minutes or so.

(Bet you know what's coming! scratch head ) My mate and his equally scurrilous friends used to get in the top cubicle and drop a large ball of newspaper in the trough, and wait with fag lighter at the ready until they heard the flush start to run. lol4

Then they also ran - fast - as the lighted paper scorched all the bums on the way to the bottom (awful pun intended!) end of the trough.

He swears it's a true tale, and knowing him I believe it.

In the early '60s the 1st Wigtownshire Scouts had a great Scout Master in the form of 'Skip' Murdock (Jimmy) On w/e camps and on the annual camps we used old dressing table drawers, with two holes cut in the bottom placed upside-down over a 'deep' pit, for the solid stuff. The 'hale brae face' for the liquid!
Needless to say it was the lot of the Patrol leaders to organise this facility.

Parts came early pm today, having been ordered Friday pm, from 'Bradtech'
Fitted and fully functional.
The Cassette Tank Mechanism came with two float units, the C500 one separate but with full fitting instructions for the three pieces (two float units and valve mech.)
So I now have a C500 float & bracket spare (will swap for new cassette blade!!)
Will think about servicing the old unit now fully de-loused by shmbo.
frederic

thanks to all for info
