help with headlight deflectors

Post by shaz on Fri Jun 19, 2015 2:39 pm

Hi We are off to France tomorrow and have just gone to fit the eurolite deflectors. I can't make head nor tail of the instructions scratch head . We have a 1995 Clubman GL on VW T4. Can any one tell me where on the headlite to fit them.

Thanks Mojo. Have had a look but not much help, hoping some one with a T4 could tell me where to fit them.

I'd recommend doing a search on the UK VW T4 forum, and then asking if it's not been covered before. TBH you may find it easiest just to use tape and mask them up by trial and error.

Hi Mike had a look in the handbook nothing about deflectors. Have done a search on google but getting conflicting info. Don't recon we will be driving much in the dark this time of year so will just stick the deflectors where I think and hope for the best.

Re: help with headlight deflectors

Hi there,

No need for any handbook or instructions at this time of night.

Park about five metres from any wall or garage door and switch the headlights on, on "dip".

You will see two beams that shine brightly down towards the left-hand (i.e. the verge) side of the van.  One will hit the wall where the verge would be and the other will hit the wall more or less in the centre of the vehicle. These are the two light beams that need deflecting.

Stand to the right of each headlight in turn and using something about the size of an ordinary playing card move it over the headlight glass until you find out where these light beams are actually coming from.  (You may need someone to sit in the driving seat to help you with this.)

When you find out where the beams are coming from take the beam deflectors, line them up with the relevant parts of the headlights and stick them in place.

Hope this helps. allthumbz

Best regards,
drinksallround

PS  We used a bit of black duct tape for many years but lashed out on proper deflectors a couple of years ago.

Supplementary to Dutto's practical advice, if you stand at the front of the Clubman (lights off!) look at the headlight lens. It's got markings on it. On the 2 of them, there's a roughly triangular patch towards the left. That's the patch to cover. (it bends the light to the UK kerbside - which would dazzle frogs. And drivers in France.

Forty continental tours and counting, never yet fitted beam deflectors. When I drive at night it's at a moderate speed and with the headlights in the fully down position.
