aniversary model

Post by oxford chris on Sat Apr 25, 2015 9:04 pm

Hello chaps,
Have just purchased  an '04 clubman anniversary model.
Low mileage , FVW service history , one owner, but she's not perfect.
Radio/cassette player disconnected, as when connected, drains battery ! scratch head
Would appreciate your comments, also any info on this model greatly appreciated.
Can't wait to get out and about in her.
Any thoughts on a name ? confused3
Chris.

Thanks for the welcome chaps, and thanks for the offer of info daisy mae.
Being a new anniversary owner as well as a new motor homer I do in fact have more than a few questions. Most of which I will probably find the answers to as I go along.
However the one that is foremost on my mind is .....
What's the story regarding the "anniversary" model ?
I was under the impression that the clubman was only made up to 2003 and was surprised and excited to find an 04 model.
How many were made and what was the new price in 04 ?
Were there any significant differences to previous models ?
Stuff like that would all be great to know.
"Dora the Explorer", wonderful, just right !
When you questioned the gender I was rather taken aback, just automatically assumed they were all girls.
Doubt if I could come up with anything as brilliant as "Dora", may be a few suggestions might help.
Anyway thanks again, will look forward to chatting with you all.
Chris.

Welcome to the forum

The Clubman Anniversary was launched for a short while and is to all intents a Gatcombe which had previously been launched and was popular with users. Generally speaking if you see things relating to the Gatcombe they probably apply to the CA.

They both are in effect updated Clubman vans with the more modern luton style and interior updating.
IMO they are an excellent choice having the VW chassis with a nice looking monocoque body shell and its a great pity that this van is no longer produced.

Thanks Roger,
Just the stuff I was hoping to find out.
I chose based on the t4 base vehicle as first and formost I wanted something that was not to big for country lanes and was excellent to drive.
Oh yes and has good fuel economy.
Sounds like I may have made a good choice.

You certainly have, I chose mine mainly for the VW T4 as I had a previous T4 with a Topaz, you will find it is a tardis, the luton is brilliant for storage, holds Duvalays, pillows. 2 blankets, the extra cushions that make up the bed, fold away picnic table, fiamma tripod plus table to go with it, parasol, for the dog, lounger,  silver screens, and still room .

Will PM you

Hi Chris, and welcome!

Might be worth having a look at "vwt4camper.info" which has a lot of info on T4-based campers.

Thanks Steve will do that.
Oh yes something I meant to ask if anyone can give me a little advice.
Am planning on having a tow bar fitted. Not for actual towing but to have a carry platform/bike rack attached.
Contacted Watling Engineers in St Albans as they advertise tow bars for motorhomes.
Rang them as couldn't find Clubman on their AS list and was told it had to be a bespoke fabrication and would take a full day. Cost £520ish not including ball hitch or electrics.
Does this sound a bit pricey or is it just me ?
Chris.

I am thinking of having the Fiamma bike rack put on the back as I believe the plates are already fitted by AS under the back window, if this is not the case can someone advice please. also has anyone put a box on this bike rack, any for and against.

Sorry if I have hijacked this thread.

Hi daisy mae,
You are correct about the reinforcing plate inside & below the rear window, well, they were there in mine when I fitted the bike-rack, & as you can see, the Fiamma box ( I have a little one ) hugegrins sits on it nicely, but a larger one can also be accommodated,  mounted & dismounted in about 10 mins.

Many thanks, that looks good, with the box off and a bike on the rack, can you still open the window?

Not really, maybe just 'crack' it open for ventilation.

The Anniversary was built until 2003, when the T4 ceased production. You probably have an '03 build model but sold in 2004.

From memory they were £36,000 in 2003  confused3

Autosleeper will suppy you with a blueprint to identify the wooden batons to drill through to secure the Fiamma rack - it's a bit of a daunting task but rewarding after you drill the first through the body.

The towbar has to be bespoke because AS have a build tolerance of 25mm! I searched high and low and nobody would supply an off the shelf towbar. (that's why I fitted the rack to the rear wall)

One of the members on here, Deckie, made a towbar for his - good job too!

Dear Dandy Warhol,
Thanks for the info. Have just phoned Auto Sleeper and their chap Mark said that the clubman was 'not suitable for having a tow bar fitted', and strongly advised against it.
Apparently one of the Fiamma bike racks (not sure which one) correctly fitted to the rear panel of Clubman will allow window on anniversary model to open normally with 320ltr box fitted.
He also said one of the Fiamma bike racks would carry 48kgs.(think this is the one with extra top fitting points) Not sure if window would open with this type fitted or indeed either type whilst carrying bike/s.
P.S. can any one please tell me how to PM someone, can't seem to work out how to do it. content

Thanks for the link Dandy.
Seems like AS definitely don't want a tow bar fixed to their chassis extensions then.
I guess I have to find a firm that will fabricate something that fixes directly to VW chassis but still enables access to waste tank and spare wheel.
Anyone gone this route before ?

Watlings and Armitage will make a bar to go back to the VW chassis but you need to take your van to them - it will be a bespoke towbar due to AS build inaccuracies between models
