why does my water not heat on gas

Post by shirltrot1365 on Mon Apr 20, 2015 10:10 pm

Please help Autosleeper friends.
The gas does not appear to be getting through to my Cascade water heater tank.  The pilot tries to light but does not succeed.  The water heats up on hook up electric, but not on gas.  Any suggestions please.

Does it have an external flue cover and if so have you removed it?
(Ours has a safety interlock which prevents it working on gas if the cover is on).
Have you recently changed the gas bottle? If so there may be air in the system - do other gas appliances e.g. cooker work? ( It's always worth lighting the gas rings after changing the gas bottle as any air works through much quicker).

If none of the above helps, maybe give us some more information on circumstances, what you've tried, has it worked OK until now, etc.

cheers

Have you been overenthusiastic with the hose when washing the van and water has got in through the vent. The lad who used to do mine put the hose on to rinse off and it knackered the ignitor module just inside.....

Ooooh!!  That hurts!!  But provides another reason to not bother washing the van!! hugegrins hugegrins

Back on topic ....

Our water heater is a bit temperamental and seems to choose whether to work or not work depending on its mood. tap_fingers tap_fingers

I haven't found a positive reason for this yet because "Cold water is good for you." (to quote my Mum) ....

.... but I suspect that the intermittent nature of the problem means that the pilot light may occasionally be being deflected (by soot, bit of rust etc) from the thermal strip that keeps the gas flowing after the initial start-up sequence has completed.

We've learned to live with it but if it is bothering you then I suggest that you take a look inside and check out the cleanliness of the internals.

Hope this helps. allthumbz

Hi there,

It's not all that difficult.  Here's a photo of when a passing motorist tried to get his car inside! allthumbzallthumbz

Four screws and the front of the heater comes off even without someone helping to remove it! allthumbz

If it's like our Carver Cascade II in the Clubman, it's not an uncommon problem. Even the manual refers to what you are describing. It says something like "if the light on the control panel goes red, switch it off, leave it for five minutes and try again". Seems to happen less if I use it regularly and have not recently changed or switched the gas bottle off.

Although i'm not familiar with your van I wonder if it has a safety device like my Topaz.
If the window above the heater exhaust is open it operates a switch which will not allow the water heater to light.

Hi there,
When I had some work done on my Duetto I found the same problem as you are experiencing. I sat out in the van and just kept on trying to get it to light, and as the red light came on I would try and try again. After maybe 20 minutes it fired up and has always fired up immediately since. Maybe an air lock, maybe dirt, but perseverance did the trick for me.

This was also a problem on our Exec.

It turned out to be that the burner end caps had rusted away and were allowing gas to escape. We replaced the burner and it worked a lot better but the problem came back intermittently until I removed and cleaned the gas jet.

There's an interlock cutout which detects the correct flame height, so if it's a weak flame the cutout operates after a few seconds.
