Executive '95 Gets New Vinyl Flooring - pics

Post by meanchris on Mon Apr 13, 2015 10:31 pm

Our '95 Executive, as promised, has had its new vinyl plank floor laid today.

Here are a series of photos of the process, I'll add remarks about the problems we encountered after the pics.

My tea was ready once the floor was completed, so I'll add those photos when I've taken some more in daylight.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Rear carpet removed, and I was struggling to get the table sockets out, as the steel screws had bonded to the aluminium sockets.
I eventually had to use an impact driver to remove the screws.

My pal Rob, (a professional flooring contractor) scraping the old carpet backing off the floor, prior to preparing the surface for gluing.
The floor surface turns out to be sheathed in GRP resin, presumably to prevent it de-laminating if it gets spills on it, thumbs up AS

The hab floor surface prepared and ready for the glue.

The rear edge of the cab carpet (which is staying for now, until we can figure out how to remove the central floor pad between the seats), showing the layers of carpet, double sided gripper, edge of the steel cab floor etc. I finally managed to get the gripper screws out of the floor with the impact driver, to remove the gripper plate.

Cutting the vinyl flooring planks to shape, and laying dry to check for fit

Spreading the special plank adhesive, which is left until 'touch dry'

Laying the first planks along a datum line, (drawn on the floor before spreading the glue).
Rob planks over the table socket holes, then cuts them out afterwards, by warming the floor with his heat gun and finding the hole by touch.
Amazing skills to watch.

More pictures to come tomorrow, when it's daylight.  up!

Thanks Margaret,

I haven't been able to go back in to take any more photos yet, but I will  hugegrins

As far as a new van, aren't we all, always "just looking"?

We went to Newark and had a look round Brownhills and SMC.

I think if we saw a really good 2005/2006 Exec, we might go for it, otherwise we might be enjoying Jean Claude (Damn Van) until we can afford to fully retire and maybe buy a Broadway EB.

Chris has "fell in luv" with that layout now.  Whistle1

EDIT: I'm bloomin' annoyed, because the two brand new covers for the table sockets, which I ordered last September from AS, are not identical.

One is Chrome and was covered with a protective film of white plastic, the other is brushed stainless steel and was protected by a blue film, which won't all come off.

I've rung the nice AS spares lady, who says that all the ones in stores are (as far as she knows) covered in blue plastic. I think that I'be been sent the bottom of the barrel ones by a previous stores keeper.  censored!

Don`t blame you re 2005/6 Exec. does look very nice. going to motorhome show Friday, just to look as you do, but more for the upholstery stalls, arranged to see Barry from Regal, made a provisional booking for 15th May, can only do the cab seats ,they are busy,  another time for the habitation side.

Have P[M`d you

I haven't decided on or fitted the correct upstands yet, to finish the floor edges. The quadrant I bought turned out to be a bad idea, as it won't go round the little corners near the bathroom door - dohhhh.

This a good representation of the colour, I particularly like the finish round the step, it looks great.

The sunlight has messed up my phone camera here, but you get the idea. Note the old table socket covers, AS have sent me two new ones that are different finishes  censored!

I plan to insulate the table sockets before refitting them. If I can find a plastic bottle of the right diameter, cut the bottom off it and fill it with rockwool or polystyrene packing, I think that'll help to keep the floor warmer.

At the moment the bottom of the table socket sticks through the floor into the airflow under the van.

Well, the final part of our refurb is done, we fitted a new cab carpet today with the help of our trusty flooring contractor pal Rob.

The carpet is 'off the roll' from Carpet Right, Thames Twist - 90 Camel at £8.99/msq
We bought a 2x4m piece so that we can make fitted removable hab mats from what's left over after the cab was fitted, which used one piece approx 1.85m (W) x 1.6m (L).

Here's the cab floor with the old blue carpet after removal of the carpeted plywood pad between the seats.
If anyone remembers me asking a question about this, we eventually discovered that it was just stuck down on top of the main carpet presumably, as there's a circular hole in the cab's metal floor above the fuel tank sender, in case someone puts their foot through the hole  winks

You can see the glue that was used to stick the pad down in the first four pics.

Here's the back edge of the old carpet with the steel cab floor sticking out and the new vinyl planks.
The new carpet edge will be where we've laid the new gripper, so that the front bed legs will sit on the carpet.

Here's my foot demonstrating the hole under the old carpet, where I think there's a hatch for the fuel tank sender.

Here's a couple of views of the new carpet.

Here's the finished product, we now have a nice flat colour co-ordinated floor all the way through the van and we're really pleased with how it's turned out after all the hard work.

Hope you like it and are inspired to have a go at your own van if you've been thinking about a refurb.  up!

Thanks fellas.

We made sure that the new carpet goes as far up the footwells as possible, to improve the insulation a little, we just have to fit some flexible plastic binding to the carpet edges at the wheelarches.

As an aside, the wind was blowing a freezing gale yesterday and I noticed that the footwells were filling with cold air. I moved the heater control from footwell to windscreen and the van cab warmed up considerably, as the wind didn't seem to blow so forcefully through the screen vents.
I'll be making sure I do this before sleeping in the van in cold weather in future - every little helps.  up!

I also have a new rad in the garage awaiting a nice day for fitting, then we're 'good to go'.

La Belle France here we come (again).  hugegrins

Thanks Peter, the van now has new owners, but we intend to lay the same flooring in the new van, as we think that it has a better finish than the standard vinyl floor.

allthumbz Superb job in both parts. I watched an old guy fitting carpets (old school I suppose), it is an art to get it looking good. The carpet in our Duetto is fitted wall to wall in one peace  as I found when the body work was repaired.
The issue of vents being open I know about. When I was working on the roadside we would be called out to Fords with the alarm going, off parked on the sea front facing the sea. It was usually the heater left on screen only or the vents left open. The movement sensors on cheap alarms would be triggered by the draft from the vents. Turn the car round or alter the heater settings would cure the problem. tap_fingers

There's a thread about it somewhere, but I can't seem to find it.

It was done at Regal Furnishings, using the original cab seats but with all the other cushions replaced.

It cost around £2500 in 2014 but we don't have the van any more. We did a couple of trips with the new interior and really enjoyed it, then we spotted a 2005 Exec at a good price and spec on our return from France last year, so we bought that one instead.

EDIT: Looking at the post dates, I can't believe that this was all just last year, we'd bought our new van by mid September. tap_fingers

EDIT2: Here's the original thread:
