Question about the 12v system in a clubman

Post by drex on Thu Apr 09, 2015 9:12 pm

Is the main van battery, isolated from the leisure battery?

What I mean is, if the leisure battery runs out of juice, will it
Swap over to the vans main battery, or not?

Thanks in advance.....

You may get a more definitive answer if you say what make/model of power controller your van has fitted - A-S changed on a frequent basis.

However, it is very unlikely that any controller will auto switch in that way. The reason why is that if it were to do that you would run the risk of flattening both batteries - you would not then be able to start the van, obviously...

More recent controllers than your van is likely to have can auto-switch from engine to leisure battery, but I don't think any will go the other way - if the leisure battery gets too low then typical they will just turn off the habitation electrics.

No, you're model won't switch to the main battery

I think there's some confusion here.  The fridge only works on 12v when the engine is running the alternator. Otherwise the fridge works on either 240v or gas

Even when the engine isn't running, can't the fridge use what is already stored in the leisure battery ?

Not with the standard setup in the Clubman - unless someone has changed the fridge.
The fridge should have a red flick switch which operates the fridge but only when the engine is running. You'll notice than whenever the engine is switched off, the red light goes out - no fridge

Another question,

When I hook up the van to 230v, do I need to turn off the 12v system before I do this ?

And if I forget, what will happen ?

Thanks.

No.

When you plug in the mains, the van's onboard power supply takes over from the leisure battery and charges the battery at the same time. When you disconnect the mains it goes back to battery power.

It's completly automatic  you don't need to do anything. up!

Brod.
