Anyone Used Eskdale C&CC Site?

Post by Peter Brown on Mon Mar 23, 2015 1:02 pm

We're thinking of spending a few days in the Ravenglass/Eskdale area in mid September.  The C&CC site at Eskdale looks good.  Has anyone experience of it and or the Hardknott Pass with a 2.3m x 7.3m motorhome?

That looks a better bet, that site didn't come up when I did a map search on the C&CC web site!  What are the catering facilities (ie Pubs) near the site like?

Peter, I think Eskdale is tents only,  Ravenglass has some pubs in the village and the railway station has a pub and restaurant called the Ratty arms. The minature railway station also has a restaurant.

I' m not sure if the minature railway is running in September up to Eskdale, but if so, well worth a trip. A bus runs from Ravenglass to Whithaven daily.

There is also a large manor house and grounds nearby which has an owl santuary, I'm afraid I forget i'ts name, also worth a trip.

You will find it on the net.

Regards Leighton.

Eskdale does motorhomes but not caravans.  The railway is running, that's the prime objective of the trip.  The Eskdale site is more inviting because of the walking opportunities but the pitches are all grass if its wet!!!

Ravenglass is a lovely site, very welcoming managers as well. There is a Roman Bath house a short walk away and the ''li' ratty'' railway is a great trip with great views. Whitehaven well worth a run to as well, has a sea lock (had never seen one before) and lovely marina and beach and  loads of shops if retail therapy is required. Park in Tesco's car park (I think it was a Tesco anyway).

Agree about Whitehaven.  We stayed a few days at the CC Dockray Meadow site when we started the Coast to Coast walk and spent a day off in Whitehaven - visited scene of US invasion during war of independence.  It was just about 10 days before the local taxi driver shot several people in 2010.

Hi,
Eskdale is a brill site, went about 3 years ago, they put us on a hard standing by the camping barn,
walking is great, pubs are good and let in dogs,
didnt go via hard knot pass though, had a VW at the time that did not like big hills! hugegrins

I think that HardKnott could be difficult with a 7m motorhome. Some of the hairpins are very tight , as I remember.  Haven't been over for 40 years but did it with a fully laden Hillman Minx estate when lots of other vehicles could not make it.  I remember distinctly that the little VW flat four rising roof motorhomes were sailing over, seemingly effortlessly, while about 50% of other vehicles failed.  If you do the Hardknott you will probably also do the Wrynose which is less taxing.  As I recall the Hardknott is more difficult and steeper from Eskdale than from the Wrynose/Langdale end.

Hi Peter,

I attempted the Hardknott from the Eskdale end in my Clubman a couple of years ago- it was a test prior to visiting the Alps. Having managed all the other passes without a problem, I failed on this one! Admittedly it was chucking it down with rain and the front tyres weren't new, but I failed miserably. The hairpins are very sharp, but they're so steep that the road appears to be almost vertical in front of the windscreen. The worst bits of road are steep, wiggly, and highly polished from other peoples attempts. I got stuck, and found there wasn't any room to manoeuvre between the horrendously steep roadsides, upwards on the nearside, and scarily downwards on the offside. I won't go into details (I do have some dignity), but I managed to, erm, escape and reverse about a mile before I was able to turn round and head west again.
In short, don't be tempted! Its not worth it. FWIW, the Hardknott Pass was very much worse than anything we found in the Alps.

I think I've got the picture.  If we go it will be to Ravenglass.

Another vote for Ravenglass, my favourite site. Very pretty with lively views and really nice facilities blocks.

It's Muncaster Castle referred to above and a decent walk from the site. If you walk up there you can sneak in the back gate!

Ravenglass great site .Eating out great ,two pubs and the railway resturant, but just be aware some of their portions are large. The railway is brilliant, plenty of places to alight ,walk ,and rejoin, either train [going up or back down]Also a few hostelries between Stations.
 Terry
PS I think the" Sherpa" mini bus goes over hardknott but it is a Transit and probably rear wheel drive and the driver will know all the passing places.

Stayed at Ravenglass at Easter . A nice welcoming site. Needed to use our ramps for the first time.
Regarding Hard knott Pass..........DONT DO IT, not in a motorhome. We did it in a car, and never will I do it again! There were signs up saying nothing bigger than a car to use it, but there was allsorts of vehicles we came across, and found it difficult to pass by oncoming vehicles. Really really really, I advise you not to do it.
